I don’t know if the Japanese government is incredibly stupid, incredibly incompetent or completely insane but I suspect it might be all three. Either way, your life and health are still at risk and will be for a long time yet.
According to the August 21st report from nuclear expert, Arnie Gundersen – here’s the video link – the Japanese are burning radioactive material instead of storing it. They limit themselves to 8,000 Becquerels per kilo of contaminated material. They are then cheating on their own guidelines by mixing it with material of lesser radioactivity so the AVERAGE is 8,000 Becquerels. Note: this does NOT result in less atmospheric contamination because the same amount is entering the atmosphere. All they’re doing is setting arbitrary limits and then blatantly exceeding them.
How does this affect you? Radioactive material lying on the ground in Japan affects only the Japanese. However, once burned, the smoke with ‘hot’ radioactive particles enters the atmosphere and contaminates the rest of us. Gundersen says that recently, Geiger counters detected radioactive \'rain-outs\' in British Columbia and Oklahoma. By the way, Oklahoma is nowhere near the West coast. Furthermore, Geiger counters detect only Gamma radiation. They do NOT detect Alpha or Beta.
Oh, and the huge tents they’re making to enclose the 6 reactors that I mentioned in previous commentary whose purpose is supposedly to condense the radioactive steam – well according to Gundersen, these tents will have tall stacks to vent the steam higher into the atmosphere to carry radiation away from the reactors which will be better for the doomed workers (Gundersen estimates a 50% death rate among them) but it will be worse for the rest of us because where do you think the radioactive contamination is going? Everywhere else i.e. the air we breathe.
To make matters worse, Canadian and U.S. governments are NOT testing for radiation. According to Washington’s Blog of August 15th, “Gundersen is working with scientists who will publish a paper in the near future definitively debunking Canadian and American health officials’ claims that only harmless levels of radiation are being released.
Gundersen has a high-level contact in the State Department who says that the U.S. government has decided – within various agencies, including the State Department, FDA, and other agencies – to downplay the dangers from Fukushima. Because of this policy decision, the government is not really testing for radiation.” Here is Gundersen’s podcast

Once again, I urge you to limit the time you spend outdoors and beware of rainwater as it is likely contaminated. See this link for more detailed recommendations of what you can do to prevent radioactive contamination
